You are invited! Come to downtown Blue Ridge Georgia to celebrate the Labor Day holiday and share the community Spirit of fellowship & fun! The Labor Day Bar-B-Q is faithful-ly held on the first Monday in September, rain or shine. The tents are up! In this uniquely cooperative effort, Charismatic, Baptist, Catholic, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, & Presbyterian Churches join hands across denominational lines to raise benevolent funds to help Fannin County neighbors in need.
Weekend festivities begin at six p.m. on Sunday, September 2, with an outdoor Community Worship Service led by Pastors from participating churches. Song leaders guide spirited congregational singing in the park. The old-fashioned Ice Cream Social that follows the Worship Service is sponsored again this year by the Blue Ridge Dairy Queen Grill & Chill. Stay a while after the Worship Service to enjoy DQ ice cream while visiting with old, and making new, friends. You may even want to sign up and join over three hundred spirited volunteers that help ensure a fun, safe and successful Labor Day Bar-B-Q.
The railway park bustles with overnight preparations as the glow of the night fire and the rising holy smoke can be seen from afar. The warmth of fellowship is best enjoyed when working side by side at “the Pit” during the cool night, volunteering during the day or simply joining friends and family for dinner on the grounds and music.
On Monday, September 3, folks can follow the smoke to the south end of the Railway Park where the Labor Day meal is served with live music from 11:30 to 6:30 pm. In 2011, the event was cut short by tornadic weather in downtown Blue Ridge. Fewer funds were raised but rather than increase meal prices, sponsorships and donations are encouraged to support Good Samaritans benevolent works.
Your dinner plates include all the fixins – baked beans, bread, no-mayo pepper slaw, pickles PLUS iced tea AND homemade brownie or pound cake and crisp Mercier’s apple for dessert! The price is the same as last year and based on your choice of entrées: St. Louis Style Pork Ribs ($10), a half chicken ($9) or a pulled pork sandwich ($8). Whole chickens or racks of ribs may be available with prices to be determined by market cost as well as limited quantity of our signature barbecue sauce bottled for folks to take home.
Advance tickets may be purchased from a participating church or from the Fannin Chamber of Commerce. Presale tickets allow folks to skip the on-site ticket line in the park to enter the food line. Folks wanting to use the drive through service on corner of Summit and East 1st Street may consider bringing a box to accommodate the meals purchased.
The Labor Day Bar-B-Q Stage hosts tri-state area Gospel and Blue Grass music groups so consider bringing your lawn chair or blanket to relax after dinner and stay a while. Blue Grass groups sharing their time and talents this year include the River Park Bluegrass Band, the Cartecay River Band and Mountain Rascals as well as Southern Gospel music by the Hogsed Brothers and by the Caylor Family.
Entertainers are made especially welcome by returning guests who have made Labor Day Bar-B- Q part of their own holiday traditions. First and second generation LDBBQ volunteers visit with first and second generations of families from the tri-state area and beyond that return each year to share in the Blue Ridge Labor Day Bar-B-Q festivities. Everyone is welcome to come eat and share their holiday with us!
Participating churches bring tables and chairs to the park for your dining pleasure and some guests bring a blanket to picnic under an old oak tree. Additional signature barbecue sauce is available in the dining room as well as hand-washing facilities so folks can really enjoy their barbecue dinners, home-style.
The Labor Day Bar-B-Q Weekend is sponsored by the Good Samaritans of Fannin County, an interdenominational association of churches. This local ministry is based on the parable of the Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37, which defines our responsibility to serve our neighbors. Event proceeds support Good Sam’s benevolent fund for Fannin County neighbors in need. As you are able, please consider gifting prayers, time, talents, service, or donation in excess of the modest meal price to “Help us to help others, in His name” Sponsorship forms and information can be downloaded from www.goodsamfc.com
