You are invited to celebrate Labor Day weekend in downtown Blue Ridge (Georgia). Bring your family and friends and share the Spirit of community fellowship and fun August 31 through September 2, 2013. Weekend events are sponsored by an association of churches, the Good Samaritans of Fannin County, Inc. In this uniquely cooperative effort, Charismatic, Baptist, Catholic, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches join hands across denominational lines to raise benevolent funds to help their Fannin County neighbors in need.
Weekend festivities begin on Saturday August 31 with a new event this year, “PIC-NIC-NAC in the Park” from 10 am to 4:00pm. Good Sam invites churches and nonprofit groups to participate in a joint nonprofit fundraising activity by bringing items to sell in the park. The public is invited to rummage through tables in the park to discover usual and unusual NIC-NACs offered by churches and nonprofit groups. Breakfast and lunch concessions are available for folks to enjoy a leisurely PIC-NIC in the downtown Railway Park. Tents already in place for Monday’s Bar-B-Q provide protection for guests and vendors from both sun and rain. Vendors provide their own sale tables and donate a booth fee of ten dollars and ten percent of sales to Good Samaritans.
At six o’clock Sunday, September 1, come enjoy the outdoor Community Worship Service immediately followed by an old fashioned Ice Cream Social. Pastors from Good Samaritan participating churches take part in the service and song leaders guide Spirited congregational singing. Plan to stay a while after the worship service to visit old or make new friends while enjoying ice cream provided by the Blue Ridge Dairy Queen Grill & Chill.
Monday, Sept 2, marks the 33rd annual Labor Day BAR-B-Q for Blue Ridge. From 11:30 to 6:00 pm dinner on the grounds is served with Gospel and Blue Grass Music. Tri-state area groups grace the Labor Day Bar-B-Q Stage so you may want to bring a lawn chair to relax after dinner and stay a while to enjoy the talent.
Despite rising food costs, Good Sam is keeping the same meal prices this year and welcomes additional donations. Limited quantities of whole chickens, racks of ribs, pork butts and our signature barbecue sauce are for sale with price determined by market costs. Your dinner plates include all the fixins – baked beans, bread, no-mayo pepper slaw, pickles, iced tea, a crisp Mercier’s apple and a homemade brownie or pound cake for dessert. Your ticket price is determined by your choice of meat as follows: St. Louis Style Pork Ribs ($10), chicken ($9) or pulled pork sandwich ($8). As always, late lunch or early dinner lines are generally the shortest.
Folks with advance tickets can enter the food line and avoid the on-site ticket line in the park. Presale tickets are available from participating churches, the Fannin Chamber of Commerce on Orvin Lance Drive, Boo Bear Bake Shop on Hwy 5 North or American Wholesale Print Shop on Appalachian Hwy/515 East. The Labor Day Bar-B-Q drive-thru service is available for businesses and patrons in the same location. Cars should enter along East Main St and exit via Summit St to old Hwy 76/East 1st St. For online mapping/directions, please use 906 E Main Street in Blue Ridge.
This Fannin County ministry is based on the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 defining our responsibility to serve our neighbors in need. Fundraising proceeds support the interdenominational benevolent fund. As you are able, please consider gifting prayers, time, talents, service, or donations in excess of the modest meal price to “Help us to help others, in His name “
There are several ways folks can get more information, donate, volunteer and/or help sponsor Good Samaritan efforts.
