As we have said our goodbyes to Pastor Doug and Diane and wish them the best at Locust Grove, I am pleased to announce that Dr. James (Jay) Hughes has been assigned as our pastor for the coming year. Jay and his wife Anne are from Albany, GA, and most recently served at Cornelia UMC in GA.
Jay is a graduate of the Univ. of Kentucky, Asbury Theological Seminary, and the Candler School of Theology. He has over 31 yrs. Of service in ministry through the UMC.
Jay is active in the aviation community as a private pilot and as a member of Civil Air Patrol. He has served as the Commander of Georgia Wing, having previously served as special advisor to the Civil Air Patrol Chief of Chaplain Service in the area of publications. Jay has served at every level of Civil Air Patrol, including Squadron Chaplain, Group Chaplain, Georgia Wing Chaplain, Southeast Deputy Region Chaplain and Secretary of the Chaplain Service Advisory Council. He holds qualifications as a mission observer, counter drug observer and cadet orientation pilot, along with master ratings in Aerospace Education and Administration.
While serving as a Civil Air Patrol Chaplain, Jay contributed to the material used to teach moral development to Civil Air Patrol cadets. As both a contributing writer and an editor of “Flight Time: Values for Living”, Jay has joined with others to focus on character development for young people.
Jay enjoys golf, playing the trumpet and flying. He is a long time member of the Rotary Club (some of our members will have to work on that) and volunteers as a Friend of SmithGall Woods State Park. Jay and Anne have two children, Elizabeth and Amanda.
